Lysol Antibacterial Kitchen Cleaner

* why is this a good deal
I have tried the cheaper brands, but they dry with a smear that really doesn't give a fresh and clean look to the kitchen table. It simply didn't look clean. Lysol dries to a clear finish... even on sand blasted glass.

* Who makes it?
Lysol

* What does it have to offer?
It kills 99.9 percent of the germs and you definitely want something like that for you kitchen! It can be used on Fiberglass, Plastic, Stainless Steel and Wood.

* What is unique about it
It offers a nice clean fragrance. The one that I'm using is lemon scented.

* How much does it cost?
On Amazon is retails for $7.07, but I would add it to your grocery list and check to see what it will cost locally.

* Is it good for this time of year??
I use it year round, but I should think that germs would be even more active in the summer time!

* What is it made of?
Ammonia is listed on the website. On the bottle, I'm seeing dimethyl benzyl ammonium cholide.

* Any cautions to be aware of?
It says that it can irritate the eyes and skin. I would obviously keep it away from my eyes, but I haven't noticed any skin irritations, but it is good to know!

* What do I like about it??
No rinsing involved. I simply spray the table or counter tops, and wipe it clean. Spills and splotches gone. It also kills harmful bacteria, including salmonella, E. coli, listeria and staph. The EPA registered formula is also effective against HIV (AIDS virus)

You might be a shopaholic

"Studies estimate that as many as 17 million Americans, better than one in 20 of us, can't control our urge to shop, even at the expense of our job, our marriage, our family and our finances."

I think that we can break that down even further. There are certain items that while I want them, I can walk away and tell myself that I don't need them. Now with books, that is another story. I can't walk out of a bookstore without at least an arm full. It's like I get the bookstore mixed up with the library! I really have to learn to control this urge. I have done quite well in the clothing department. My next project... saying no to books. Okay, at least slowing down.

So, where do you fit in to the picture?? Are you a shopaholic??

Shop smart

New and old versions of the brandImage via Wikipedia

While most of think that we are smart shoppers, most of us make a lot of mistakes... like impulse buying? I'm definitely guilty of that and can pretty much talk myself into any item that catches my eye! Give me an item that appeals to me and I can come up with at least 5 reasons why I should buy it. Just a few minutes ago, I was at the Heinz site and they actually give some pretty sound advice.

Topics covered:
*impulse buying
*sticking to your list
*learning to read labels
*buying online
*making shopping fun
and that is just for starters

I know that following some of the ideas, will save me money and if I save money in one area, I get to spend it somewhere else... like shoes!

Temporary Paper Shades

Bare WindowImage by a11sus via Flickr

I was just reading over at BlissTree about paper shades and thought that this would be the perfect place to bring up the discussion. When we were first starting out with our first house which was incredibly cheap in comparison with today's prices... we still had a hard time finding the money to cover all the windows. We couldn't really afford what we wanted, so we went the ugly route for a while. To me, that is a big waste of money, especially if you are going to dump the the ugly window fittings at the first chance you get.

But today, young couples trying to outfit their first home have a bit of wiggle room that we didn't have. Now there is such a thing as paper shades and they do a pretty amazing job. In fact my daughter bought a pair for a particular room that she doesn't quite know what to do with it. Until she does, the paper shades will do quite nicely!

Simple Ways to Save on Air Conditioning Costs

Internal section of a modern Americool window ...Image via Wikipedia

"Small changes around the house can significantly reduce your air conditioning costs. Make over your home and your electric bill with these money-saving tips" and thats just for starters.

*Erin has tons of suggestions and one in particular that I'm going to show my husband. I told him that it would make sense to invest in a toaster oven, but he said that they weren't worth the bother. Well, now I have proof.

And one more thing about air conditioning. If you leave the house for the day to go to work, doesn't it just make sense to shut off the air conditioning? I am amazed at how often I hear the air conditioner whirring (is that a word) away and I know that there is not one home!

Free Flowers for your Garden This Summer

In this picture the stamens of the flower are ...Image via Wikipedia

If you want new flowers for your garden, chances are you simply head out to the nursery and buy what you need. While that is a quick and easy fix, I'm thinking that there has to be a better AND cheaper way. It's called trading and it's pretty easy. You take some of the plants that you are dividing and you trade them with a neighbor for some plants that she is dividing. You both win.

Or you go to your Mom's house and gush over the gorgeous lilies that she has growing in hopes that she will go and tell you to dig up a couple and take them home. Been there and done that!

Getting the Best Deal

337/365: The Big MoneyImage by DavidDMuir via Flickr

Might be a good time to check out the condition of your beach towels. If you find that you will need more this summer, put it on your list and start comparing prices. Items like the ironing board from Harrods can range in price... BIG TIME. Who ever thought that an ironing board could have a price tag of $1000.00 For that price, I would want it to iron my clothes for me!

Not What's In Your Wallet, But What's In Your Freezer?

Freezer SchmeezerImage by corporatemonkey via Flickr

Do you have any idea of how much food is sitting in your freezer at the moment? That is going to be the goal for next week... see how many meals we can come up with by using just what is in the freezer.

I know that there is some puff pastry, a little bit of leftover pasta... the rest, haven't a clue. I think tomorrow I'm going to hawl everything out and then re-arrange everything. Then I will make a list so that I know exactly what we have to work with. I did start last week, but we have two freezers to go through! We could probably eat out of it for a month come to think of it!

Who knows... we might be in for a surprise!

Does It Pay To Grow Your Own Veggies?

Home-grown veggiesImage by miss mass via Flickr

When you think of everything that you to spend to actually grow a few veggies, it does make you wonder. On the other hand there are other benefits when you think about it.

1. You know whether or not pesticides were used.
2. They say that gardening is good for the soul. I do find that I enjoy it more if I have my Ipod with me. I have this thing called a VERY SHORT attention span and I get bored easily!
3. There is the exercise aspect of it. Gardening can be hard work!

Today's Tip

Go through your collection of books and choose six that really don't interest you any more. Now donate them to your local library.

Now because I am the Shopping Diva, I'm going to suggest that you make a slight change in your spending habits. From this day forward, you are going to borrow novels from the library. The only books you will be spending money on are the books that you will be using for some kind of reference purposes.

Now for a few more ways to save money!

Shop more often to save money

Photo of a typical refrigerator with its door ...Image via Wikipedia

"Phil Lempert, "The Supermarket Guru," is an expert on consumer behavior and food-industry trends. He appears frequently on national television, and his Web site supermarketguru.com offers shopping tips, product reviews, food news and nutrition advice."

I finally found a man who likes to shop as much as I do, but I have to admit, it never involved the supermarket. HOWEVER, Phil does point out a lot of reasons why we shouldn't simply go once a week and stock up. It usually means that you bring home a lot of stuff that you really don't need. Shopping 15 to 16 times a week makes more sense in his opinion. You merely buy what you need.

I have to admit, that I have no idea what is in the freezer part of our refrigerator. We have one of those fridges with the freezer in the bottom and looking means getting down on your knees to find anything. Now, it is simply shove it in and close the door. Now that is a waste when you think about it. Because I don't know what is in there, I run out and buy something more and the fact that I don't like to cook really doens't help either.

This was just the kick in the pants that I needed. Today after breakfast, I'm going to pull out everything that is in there and create a list that can be left on the front of the fridge. When we use something, we can cross it off.

That should save us tons of money! Now, I am going to have to find a way to make going to the supermarket more interesting. I don't know about your area, but our supermarkets are about as dull as dirt and I usually hang out in the book department and let darling husband do the shopping. He likes to cook, but he's not so good on organizing. He's as bad as moi at opening the door and shoving something in!
